If you’ve been following me for a while, hopefully you know by now that I’m a big fan of working on mindset. Getting your mindset straight is actually Module 1 in my Ebook Engines: Create Passive Income with Ebooks course.
You might think, “What does that course have to do with mindset?” But according to my students, it has EVERYTHING to do with mindset.
First things first. What is “mindset”?
In short, your mindset is all the stories going on in your head. It’s your belief system. It’s what you tell yourself is true about the way you are and the way the world works.
It can be positive, or negative or anywhere in between…
So, how do we work on our mindset? There are a lot of things we can do, but today I want to tell you about the one that has helped me most…
The most helpful thing I’ve ever done to upgrade my mindset is surround myself with people who have a positive mindset.
In her book, Mindset, Carol Dweck talks about how there are two different types of mindset: a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
A fixed mindset is one of limiting beliefs. It says, “I can’t do this, my income is limited by some fake ceiling, I’ll just naturally bad at x or y and I’ll always be bad at it,” etc. (At one point or other, this has definitely been me.)
Contrast that with the growth mindset, which is a mindset of abundance. You see your potential as unlimited and your income ceiling as non-existent. You know you always have the ability to develop your skills in any area.
So, how do you start cultivating a growth mindset?
One way to change your mindset is to change the people who you spend time with. That means editing your network so you’re spending more time with people who have an abundance mindset.
Hang out with people who are working on themselves and seeking to improve, rather than people who are complaining all the time and blaming others for their lack of success or progress.
Of course, if you have a family full of people with negative, fixed mindsets, I’m not asking you to ditch your entire family. But maybe you can edit the amount of time you spend with those people.
Surrounding yourself with other growth mindsets can be a shortcut to upgrading your own. It’s like that saying: “A rising tide lifts all boats.”
But what if you don’t have people in your life who have a growth mindset?
Don’t worry: you can find them! One way to do this is to join a course that’s designed to hone your business skills.
Sure, you join a course for the content, to learn the topic and improve in that area… but there’s also a hidden benefit to joining. You’re surrounding yourself with people who are investing in themselves and working on bettering themselves or their business!
A course that did that for me was the Lucky Bitch Money Bootcamp. The entire course was about mindset, so the content was really helpful, but also the community has been so helpful and supportive. And it continues to be, because it’s a lifetime access course!
Lucky B is mostly for women, so if you’re a dude, be advised that it’s 98% women in there. But for me, it’s been a place to surround myself with people who really see themselves as unlimited. That has been incredibly helpful in working on my mindset.
Find Denise Duffield-Thomas if mindset is on your list of things to upgrade this year, I highly recommend you listen in on her advice and see if it resonates with you.
